To me, the defining characteristic of a true farm wedding venue isn't a decorating style. It's activity. A working farm is still a farm when nobody is getting married there. Some farm wedding venues are located on crop farms. Others may be located on working animal farms. Some are fortunate enough to have both crops and animals on the property.
That means the agricultural activity surrounding the wedding is real. There may be tractors. There may be combines. There may be planting. There may be harvesting. On an animal farm, you might hear cows mooing or roosters crowing during your ceremony. The farm isn't wedding décor.
It's actually a farm. At Pole Barn Chic Pole Barn Chic is located on a working crop farm in Springfield, Illinois. We don't have livestock roaming around the wedding venue. Most of the time, guests aren't watching tractors drive around the property either. But during planting and harvest seasons, agricultural equipment may be working in the surrounding fields. When I think about traditional wedding venues, the first places that come to mind are churches and hotels. Hotels, in particular, may have large corporate infrastructures, extensive staffing, commercial kitchens, elevators, paved parking and guest rooms in the same building. For some couples, that's exactly what they want. There's nothing wrong with choosing a traditional wedding venue.
The question isn't: Which type of venue is universally better?
The better question is: Which environment feels like your wedding?

One misconception about farm weddings makes me laugh. People sometimes hear "farm" and immediately imagine cows, chickens, horses and everything that comes along with them. There may also be agricultural odors—and on a hot Illinois summer day, those odors can become considerably more noticeable. On a crop farm, the realities are different. You may have planting, harvesting, tractors, combines, dust and other agricultural activity instead. Neither is inherently good or bad. 5. A Barn Wedding Does NOT Automatically Mean Rustic
This may be the misconception I would personally like to retire forever. Barn does not mean: Mason jars. Burlap. Sunflowers. Hay bales. Brown wood everywhere. And when someone tours Pole Barn Chic and tells me: "I don't want a rustic wedding." My response is pretty simple: Good. We don't either. In fact, we don't even offer rustic decorations. A barn is a building. Rustic is a design style. Those are two completely different things.
A barn wedding can be glamorous, modern, romantic, black-tie inspired, colorful, minimal, floral, dramatic or elegant.
Your venue should support your style—not dictate a decorating stereotype.
6. The Biggest Advantage of a Farm Wedding? The Photographs.
Ask me what I love most about having weddings on a farm, and photography is very high on the list. The setting gives photographers opportunities that simply cannot be manufactured inside a ballroom. Open land. Changing skies. Fields. Sunsets. Trees. Seasonal color. Natural textures. Outdoor ceremony spaces. Long sightlines. And a landscape that changes throughout the year. You don't have to construct every backdrop.
Some of the best ones are already outside.
That's one of the reasons couples are drawn to farm wedding venues in Central Illinois in the first place.
7. But Real Farm Weddings Come With Real Farm Considerations
This is where authenticity matters.
If you want a genuine farm wedding, you also need to understand that farms aren't movie sets. They're working properties.

Dust
Agricultural odors
Animal noises

Grass and uneven outdoor surfaces

8. Illinois Gives You Four Seasons—Whenever They Decide to Arrive
Outdoor wedding properties change dramatically throughout the year. Spring doesn't look like summer. Summer doesn't look like fall. Fall doesn't look like winter. And anyone who has lived in Central Illinois long enough knows the calendar doesn't always seem to matter much to the weather. As I write this on September 1, it certainly doesn't feel like fall outside.
That's part of planning an Illinois wedding. Fields change. Trees change. Leaves fall. Snow eventually arrives. Temperatures rise and fall. The property you see in April will not look exactly like the property you see in October. That's one of the beautiful things about an outdoor property.

11. Find Your Wedding Vibe Before You Find Your Venue
Before touring 15 completely different wedding venues, decide how you want your wedding to feel.
Formal? Glamorous? Country? Modern? Historic? Traditional? Intimate? A huge party? Outdoor-focused? Then determine your realistic budget. Now start looking for venues that fit both. There is one exception: Sometimes you walk into a venue and completely fall in love with it. That's okay too. But before signing a contract, keep digging. Learn the policies. Learn the rules. Learn what's included. Learn what isn't.
Ask about alcohol, vendors, decorating, access times, weather plans, setup, cleanup and anything else that matters to you.
You may love a building and later discover that you don't love the way you're required to use it.
You're not simply choosing what your wedding venue looks like. You're choosing how you're allowed to have your wedding there.
12. Which Type of Wedding Venue Is Right for You?
Choose a traditional wedding venue if you love the formality, predictability and infrastructure of a church, hotel or similar setting.

So where does Pole Barn Chic fit into all of this? We're a barn wedding venue located on a working Central Illinois crop farm. But we intentionally leave the farm outside. Inside, Pole Barn Chic was designed to feel dramatically different from what many people expect when they hear the word "barn."
We use real professional wedding décor rather than stereotypical rustic decorations. We have dramatic chandeliers. We hung dimmable chandeliers from our glass cupolas. Our lighting is an important part of the design of the room—not an afterthought.
And then, right in the middle of all that elegance, we have a giant four-foot spinning disco ball surrounded by chandeliers. Because why shouldn't we? We also have an extraordinarily large roll-up barn door—approximately 40 feet wide and nearly 30 feet high—that can dramatically connect the indoor celebration with the outdoor property.
Depending on the wedding and circumstances, we've even allowed confetti cannons inside the venue. We aren't trying to recreate somebody else's idea of what a barn wedding is supposed to look like. We created ours. Outside is a real farm. Inside is Pole Barn Chic. And connecting all of it is something that matters to us even more than décor:
hospitality.
We're independently owned and owner-led. We provide in-house planning because we know our property, our policies, our logistics and the level of service we expect our couples and their guests to receive.
Beautiful buildings matter. Beautiful grounds matter. Lighting matters. Décor matters. But when the wedding is over, people also remember how they were treated. For us, that's part of the venue too.
The Biggest Difference Is Authenticity
Farm weddings, barn weddings and traditional weddings can all be beautiful.
None is automatically better than another.

It's the one where the setting, style, budget, rules and experience come together in a way that feels authentic to the two people getting married.
