Pole Barn Chic Was Built on Wedding and Event Experience

Pole Barn Chic did not begin because we happened to own a barn and decided weddings might be fun. Wedding and event experience came first. My professional background includes years of education, training and hands-on experience in several areas of the event industry, including wedding and event planning, event design and decorating, floral design, balloon artistry, customer service and hospitality.

My professional education and industry training has included programs and organizations such as the Institute of Wedding and Event Design, American School of Flower Design, University of Lovegevity, Ignite with Kristin Binford, Gemar Balloonista training and CPD training by Luz Paz, along with additional event-design and industry education.

Over the years, that education has been combined with something equally important: actually doing the work. Designing events teaches you about scale, proportion, color and how a room comes together.

Floral education teaches you about flowers, mechanics, placement and design. Event-planning education teaches you about timelines, vendors, logistics and preparation. Hospitality teaches you to look at an event through the eyes of the guest. And working actual weddings teaches you something no classroom ever completely can:

Weddings don't always go exactly according to plan. That is where experience becomes invaluable.

Wedding Experience That Goes Far Beyond Springfield, Illinois

My wedding and event experience did not begin—or end—in Central Illinois.Over the years, I have had the opportunity to help with destination weddings in Palm Springs, Orlando, Las Vegas, Miami and Rhode Island, including two separate Miami weddings. I have also had the opportunity to work with Walt Disney World, assisting with three weddings.

Working with weddings in different destinations and markets gave me an education that is difficult to duplicate in a classroom.Every location operates differently. Every venue has different logistics. Every couple has different expectations. Destination weddings add another layer because there are travel schedules, unfamiliar vendors, accommodations, transportation, deliveries and countless details that have to come together when everyone is away from home.

Those experiences taught me to adapt quickly, communicate clearly and look several steps ahead. They also exposed me to weddings outside of the traditional Central Illinois market. I was able to see different approaches to hospitality, design, guest experience, venue operations and event production—and bring that broader perspective back home with me.

Today, much of that experience influences how I operate Pole Barn Chic.

I didn't create PBC based solely on what I had seen other wedding venues doing in Springfield. I was able to take lessons from weddings and events in completely different destinations and combine them with what I knew and loved about Central Illinois hospitality.

That background is one of the reasons I believe professional experience matters so much. Beautiful weddings can happen anywhere. The ability to organize them, adapt when plans change, care for the people attending them and keep hundreds of moving pieces working together comes from experience.

And I am incredibly grateful that my career has allowed me to gain that experience in places ranging from Central Illinois to Florida, Nevada, California and Rhode Island—and then bring everything I learned home to Pole Barn Chic.

What Does “Professional Wedding Venue” Actually Mean?

To us, professionalism is not about wearing matching clothes, carrying a clipboard or standing silently against a wall. Professionalism is preparation.Before the first guest arrives, someone needs to understand the room layout, ceremony plan, timeline, vendors, bar, deliveries, personal décor, wedding party, family dynamics, accessibility needs and hundreds of other details that make up that particular wedding. Professionalism is also knowing the property. At Pole Barn Chic, we don't just know the wedding plan.

We know the building. We know our ceremony spaces. We know our barn. We know our electrical systems, lighting, sound, bar areas, parking, entrances, exits, restrooms, HVAC, large doors, décor inventory and grounds.

Exceptional hospitality doesn't begin when someone complains. It begins with noticing. If an older guest looks uncomfortable, we notice. If someone appears confused about where to go, we help. If a guest needs assistance getting from the parking area, we do what we can to assist. If someone looks like they need a drink—even if that drink is simply water—we can help. If a bathroom needs attention, we don't wait for a guest to tell us. If something is becoming a tripping hazard, we address it. If a guest is struggling, our first instinct should be:

What can we do? Those moments may sound small compared with chandeliers, wedding dresses and elaborate centerpieces. But after working weddings for years, we know something important: Guests remember how they were treated.

Our couples receive extensive information to help them understand the property, policies, planning process and decisions that need to be made. We communicate with couples and vendors. We learn timelines. We discuss layouts. We prepare the venue. We make sure our team understands what is happening.

Depending upon the package selected, our involvement can extend much further into timeline creation, vendor communication, setup, execution and wedding-day coordination. That preparation is important because a wedding shouldn't feel like the staff is learning about it at the same time the guests are.
