Things to Do in Springfield, Illinois: Arts, Culture & Entertainment for Your Visit
When you come to Springfield for a wedding, I hope you give yourself a little time to enjoy the area, too. You have already made the trip. Why not turn it into a weekend you will remember?
As the owner of Pole Barn Chic Events, I love helping couples think about the experience their guests will have beyond the ceremony and reception, in Central Illinois. Our little piece of country hidden in the city is part of that experience, but there is plenty more to explore.
For guests wondering what to do in Springfield, Illinois, I would start with Lincoln history, downtown art, a house tour, or a live performance. Add a seasonal market or art fair when the dates line up, and you have the beginnings of a lovely Central Illinois getaway.
This guide begins our arts, culture and entertainment series inspired by the Illinois Times Best of Springfield 2026 edition. These are suggestions to help you plan, rather than a ranked list of award winners.
Before you go: Hours, event dates, admission policies and availability can change at any time. Please check each location’s official website or call before visiting. Holiday closures and seasonal schedules may differ from regular hours.
Where should first-time visitors start in Springfield?
If you have just a few hours, choose one main attraction instead of trying to see everything. Lincoln Home is a good starting point for history, the presidential museum offers an indoor option, and Dana-Thomas House is my suggestion for guests interested in architecture and design.
Lincoln Home National Historic Site: a look at Lincoln’s everyday life
There is something approachable about learning history through a home and neighborhood. This stop gives guests a different perspective from a monument or museum, and it works well as the starting point for a downtown outing.
Tours of the home require a free ticket, available at the visitor center. Make that your first stop; do not assume you can walk straight into a tour.
Address: Visitor center, 426 South Seventh Street, Springfield, IL 62701.
Hours: Visitor center daily, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Official website: Lincoln Home National Historic Site
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum: an indoor history outing
If your group wants to spend more time exploring Lincoln’s story, put the museum on your list. It is also an option to keep in mind when the weather does not cooperate with an outdoor plan.
One useful planning detail: the museum and research library have different schedules. The information below is for the museum.
Address: 212 North Sixth Street, Springfield, IL 62701.
Hours: Daily, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; last ticket sold at 4 p.m. Closed New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Lincoln’s Tomb: a meaningful stop at Oak Ridge Cemetery
For guests who want another important Lincoln site, consider his final resting place. I would approach this as a quieter, reflective visit and leave yourself time to take it in.
The cemetery gates and the tomb have different operating hours, so check the tomb’s schedule when planning your visit.
Address: Oak Ridge Cemetery, 1500 Monument Avenue, Springfield, IL.
Hours: The state lists tomb hours as daily, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., with designated holiday closures.

What is worth exploring beyond downtown Springfield?
Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site: make room for a Central Illinois side trip
Near Petersburg, New Salem offers a reconstructed village connected to Lincoln’s early adulthood. It is a good choice for guests who would rather spend part of the day walking outdoors and exploring historic buildings.
I would save this for a day with breathing room in your schedule. If you are attending a wedding later that afternoon, factor in the drive, your visit, and time to return and get ready.
Address: 15588 History Lane, Petersburg, IL 62675.
Hours: The state currently lists Tuesday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. for March–October and 9 a.m.–4 p.m. for November–March. Because the published seasonal ranges overlap in March, confirm directly for a March visit. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Lincoln Memorial Garden: a place that is personal to me
This recommendation comes from the heart. Nick and I were married at Lincoln Memorial Garden, and I have also enjoyed taking my homeschooled daughter there for weekly visits.
For guests who want a slower morning, fresh air and a little room to breathe, this is a place I love sharing. Wear shoes suited to garden trails and check the weather before heading out.
Address: 2301 East Lake Shore Drive, Springfield, IL 62712, as listed on the garden’s homepage.
Hours: Garden daily, sunrise–sunset. Nature center Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Sunday, 1–4 p.m.; closed Monday. General garden admission is free except during special events.

What can visitors do in Springfield besides Lincoln attractions?
Dana-Thomas House: for guests who love architecture and beautiful details
If you enjoy thoughtful design, make time for this Frank Lloyd Wright home. As someone who cares deeply about how a space looks and feels, I think an architecture tour is a lovely addition to a wedding weekend.
Tours are free, with donations appreciated. Reservations are encouraged because spaces are limited.
Address: 301 East Lawrence Street, Springfield, as listed by the state historic site.
Tour times: Daily at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., subject to holiday closures and availability.

The Pharmacy Gallery and Art Space: add contemporary art to your downtown visit
For guests who enjoy discovering artists, The Pharmacy is a downtown stop to consider. This artist-run organization focuses on contemporary art and cultural events.
Its regular hours are limited, so this is one to plan around rather than leave to chance. Check the current exhibition and event calendar before your trip.
Address: 623 East Adams Street, Springfield, IL 62701.
Hours: Friday and Saturday, noon–6 p.m.; other hours by appointment.
Official website: The Pharmacy Gallery and Art Space
Hoogland Center for the Arts: plan an evening around a performance
If you arrive a night early or stay after the wedding, look at the Hoogland’s performance calendar. A theater outing can give your group something to look forward to without filling an entire day.
Choose a specific show and purchase tickets through the official website. Performance times vary; a street address does not mean there is a show or public access whenever you arrive.
Address: 420 South Sixth Street, Springfield, IL 62701.
Hours: Event and performance times vary. Confirm box office availability directly; fixed walk-in hours were not verified on the official contact page.

What seasonal arts and downtown events should guests check?
The Springfield Old Capitol Art Fair is a possibility for guests whose travel dates match the event. It takes place around the Old State Capitol grounds and surrounding downtown streets, between Fifth and Sixth streets. The organizer’s published fair hours are Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. These are event hours, not a weekly schedule. Confirm the next fair dates at the official Old Capitol Art Fair website.
The Old Capitol Farmers Market is another seasonal option, but its location and schedule change with the season. For the announced 2026–2027 winter season, it is scheduled at Union Station, 500 East Madison Street, Springfield, on the first and third Saturdays, November–April, 8 a.m.–noon, with no market December 5. Check the official farmers market page for your specific dates and the current outdoor-season details.
I would treat both as a bonus when the timing works. Annual events and seasonal markets should always be checked against your actual travel dates.
How can wedding guests fit sightseeing into the weekend?
Arriving the day before? Choose a downtown attraction, leave time for a meal, and look for an evening performance if your schedule allows.
Free on the wedding morning? Pick one short outing. Keep the ceremony time, transportation and getting ready firmly in mind.
Staying an extra day? Consider New Salem or a longer museum visit when you can enjoy it without watching the clock.
The goal is to enjoy Springfield, not make your weekend feel like a checklist.
