Springfield, IL Charity Events: A Wedding Guest Guide

Springfield, Illinois Charity Events: Have Fun and Get to Know Our Community

Coming to Springfield for a wedding? Depending on your travel dates, you might find yourself here for more than one celebration.

The Fat Ass 5K & Street Party for Charity, Springfield’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Boo Crew Haunted House are three seasonal events to check when planning a Central Illinois visit. They offer very different experiences, from a downtown race and street party to a parade or an evening of haunted-house scares.

As the owner of Pole Barn Chic Events, I love helping guests find things to enjoy around our Springfield, Illinois wedding venue. A local event can give you a glimpse of the people, volunteers and community spirit that make this area feel like home.

This article continues our series inspired by the Illinois Times Best of Springfield 2026 edition. The Fat Ass 5K won its Charity Event category; the parade and Boo Crew were among the finalists. You can read the Illinois Times winners and finalists for the full list.

Before you go: Event dates, hours, locations, ticket availability and routes can change at any time. Please check each organizer’s official website before visiting or making travel plans. These are seasonal events, so regular daily business hours do not apply.

Fat Ass 5K & Street Party for Charity: a downtown Springfield outing with personality

The name probably tells you this is not your usual serious race.

The organizers welcome participants of different athletic levels, and the event combines a downtown route with food stops, music and a street party. Its official website says all profits go to charity.

For visiting guests, I would consider this when you have a free day and want something lively to do together. You can make memories with your group while taking part in a Springfield fundraiser.

You do not have to plan your entire trip around the event, but you do need to check registration, what your ticket includes and the current schedule. If the wedding is later that day, think carefully about how much time you have for participating, returning to your hotel and getting ready.

Springfield St. Patrick’s Day Parade: plan for a festive downtown afternoon

If your visit falls around the parade, this is another way to experience Springfield with the community.

I would suggest checking the route before choosing your viewing spot. Decide where you want to watch, allow time to park and keep your group’s meeting place simple. “We will find each other downtown” tends to sound easier before everyone gets there!

The organizer describes the parade as a community-sponsored event. Its recognition in the Charity Event category comes from Illinois Times readers; guests can check the organizer’s website for sponsorship and participation information.

Springfield St. Patrick’s Day Parade location, date and time

Location: Downtown Springfield; the posted route begins at Jefferson and Sixth streets. This is a street event, rather than an attraction with one entrance address.
Next announced parade: Saturday, March 13, 2027, at noon.
Weather policy: The organizer lists no rain date. Check for cancellation notices before leaving.

For guests attending a wedding that afternoon, allow a generous cushion for leaving downtown. Check road restrictions and your route back to the hotel before settling in to watch.

Boo Crew Haunted House: seasonal scares that support charity

For guests who enjoy a haunted attraction, Boo Crew offers another kind of Central Illinois outing.

Owned and operated by the Rochester Lions Club, Boo Crew describes itself as an entirely volunteer-run organization with profits going to charity. Its attractions include the haunted house and the Trail of Lost Souls.

This is one I would save for a free evening before or after the wedding. If your group loves a scare, make it an optional outing and let everyone decide whether it sounds like their kind of fun.
