There are certain years when history, location and timing all come together.
2026 is one of those years in Springfield, Illinois.
Route 66—the legendary Mother Road—is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and this weekend, September 25–27, thousands of visitors, classic cars, hot rods, music lovers and Route 66 fans are coming to downtown Springfield for the 25th Annual International Route 66 Mother Road Festival.
For those of us who live here, Route 66 isn't simply something printed on a vintage sign.
It runs through our history.
It helped shape Springfield.
And at Pole Barn Chic Events, Route 66 history comes remarkably close to home.
Literally.
Our wedding venue sits on Old Chatham Road, in an area connected to one of the historic early Route 66 alignments heading southwest from Springfield toward Chatham.
So while Pole Barn Chic may be known today for crystal chandeliers, a four-foot spinning disco ball, beautiful grounds, weddings and hospitality, there is another story running alongside ours:
The Mother Road.
And this weekend, Springfield is celebrating it in a very big way.
Route 66 Is 100 Years Old in 2026
Route 66 was established in 1926, connecting Chicago with Los Angeles and eventually becoming one of the most recognizable roads in the world.
A century later, its appeal hasn't disappeared.
People still travel Route 66 looking for the things that made the American road trip special in the first place: neon signs, roadside restaurants, old filling stations, drive-in theaters, classic cars and towns with stories to tell.
Springfield happens to have quite a few of those stories.
The official Springfield tourism office notes that Illinois has an extraordinary concentration of Route 66 attractions, and Springfield offers everything from historic roadway and neon signs to classic food stops, museums and roadside landmarks.
And in 2026, Springfield isn't simply remembering Route 66.
We're celebrating 100 years of it.
This Weekend: The International Route 66 Mother Road Festival
If you are in Springfield this weekend, downtown is going to look a little different.
The 25th Annual International Route 66 Mother Road Festival runs September 25–27, 2026, in historic downtown Springfield.
Spectator admission is free.
Friday evening kicks off with the Route 66 cruise and live music. Saturday brings a full day of activities, classic vehicles, music, contests and entertainment, and Sunday includes the Mother Road Festival 5K and car-show awards.
The official schedule includes everything from a Friday-night cruise to Saturday's burnout contest, live bands, children's Power Wheels races and even a Cozy Dog eating contest.
Because apparently celebrating 100 years of America's most famous highway requires eating Cozy Dogs competitively.
Honestly?
That feels appropriately Springfield.

Why Route 66 Matters to Springfield, Illinois
People from outside Central Illinois understandably associate Springfield primarily with Abraham Lincoln.
And we should be proud of that.
But Springfield has another important piece of American history running through it.
Route 66.
Springfield's Route 66 attractions tell different pieces of that story.
There are historic roadway alignments.
Old signs.
Drive-ins.
Restaurants.
Museums.
Roadside attractions.
Classic food.
And places where you can stand today and imagine what it must have been like when families loaded up their cars and headed west on the Mother Road.
For wedding guests coming to Springfield from Chicago, St. Louis, Southern Illinois or farther away, Route 66 gives them something else to experience while they're here.
And unlike something created specifically for tourists, this is part of the actual history of the place they're visiting.
Start With a Cozy Dog
If someone asked me for one quintessential Springfield Route 66 food stop, Cozy Dog Drive In would certainly be on the list.
Located at 2935 South Sixth Street, Cozy Dog has been serving travelers along Route 66 since 1949.
The restaurant is known for the Cozy Dog—a battered hot dog on a stick—and has become one of Springfield's recognizable Mother Road landmarks.
During this year's Mother Road Festival, Cozy Dog is even part of the celebration downtown, with a Major League Eating Cozy Dog Eating Contest scheduled Saturday afternoon.
For wedding guests visiting Springfield for the first time, this is exactly the kind of place that makes a trip feel different from simply stopping at another interstate exit.

Route 66 Motorheads: Cars, Signs, Food and Mother Road Nostalgia
Another Springfield Route 66 stop is Route 66 Motorheads Bar & Grill, Museum and Entertainment Complex at 600 Toronto Road.
This is one of those places that's difficult to describe simply as a restaurant.
It combines food, a bar, Route 66 memorabilia, vintage signs, automobiles and roadside Americana into one very Springfield experience.
Springfield's official tourism information specifically highlights Motorheads for its Route 66 memorabilia and attractions, including its enormous outdoor Route 66 shield.
And the Mother Road Festival festivities actually began there Thursday evening with a pre-party and live music.
For out-of-town wedding guests who want something casual to do before or after wedding festivities, Motorheads gives them dinner and Route 66 history at the same stop.
Yes, Springfield Still Has a Drive-In Movie Theater
For anyone who wants to take the nostalgia a little further, Springfield is also home to the Route 66 Drive In Theater.
It is a seasonal twin-screen drive-in next to Knight's Action Park and offers the kind of classic American evening that fits perfectly into a Route 66 weekend.
There is something wonderfully appropriate about celebrating the Mother Road by sitting in your car and watching a movie under the stars.
For wedding guests arriving in Springfield Friday evening with nothing scheduled until Saturday, a drive-in movie can also be an easy, relaxed way to begin the weekend.
Walk Through Illinois Route 66 History
Visitors can also explore the Illinois Route 66 Experience at Illinois State Fairground at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
The attraction is a mostly outdoor, self-guided experience celebrating the history and roadside culture of Route 66 through Illinois.
It includes neon, signs, roadside-style displays and plenty of opportunities for photographs.
Springfield's Route 66 offerings also include the Ace Sign Museum, historic roadway, murals, wayside exhibits and additional landmarks scattered throughout the area.
You don't necessarily need an entire day.
That's one of the things I like about Route 66 for wedding guests.
You can experience a little bit of it—or make it the theme of your entire Springfield weekend.
Route 66 and Pole Barn Chic Have Something in Common
This may sound strange coming from a wedding venue owner, but one of the things I love about Route 66 is that it isn't polished into sameness.
It has personality.
One stop looks nothing like the next.
There are giant signs.
Old roads.
Drive-ins.
Diners.
Neon.
Cars.
Stories.
Things that are beautiful because they're unusual.
I think that's part of why Route 66 and Pole Barn Chic make such an interesting combination.
We aren't trying to make a farm look like a hotel ballroom.
We're also not trying to make a farm wedding look stereotypically rustic.
Pole Barn Chic sits on approximately five acres in Springfield and feels secluded almost immediately after you arrive.
I describe it as:
our little piece of country hidden in the city.
Inside, that country setting meets crystal chandeliers, disco balls, polished wedding décor, modern amenities and a dance floor designed for a party.

This is where I think couples planning a Springfield wedding have an opportunity to have some fun.
You don't need to turn your wedding into a Route 66-themed wedding.
You certainly don't need little highway shields on every table unless that's genuinely your thing.
Instead, let Springfield provide the Route 66 experience for your guests.
If family and friends are arriving Friday, give them a few suggestions.
Visit Cozy Dog.
Explore a Route 66 attraction.
Take photographs.
See some classic cars.
Go to Motorheads.
Catch a movie at the drive-in when it's operating.
Then Saturday?
Come to the wedding.
Wedding day does not need to become another sightseeing itinerary.
The wedding is the main event.
Route 66 simply gives your guests another reason to enjoy being in Springfield for the weekend.
Springfield Is Particularly Special During the Route 66 Centennial
This year's Mother Road Festival is significant because 2026 marks Route 66's centennial.
Springfield has been celebrating throughout the year, and the festivities aren't ending this weekend.
Additional Route 66 Centennial activities continue into the fall, including the Miles of Possibility Route 66 Conference in October and a 100th Anniversary Celebration scheduled for November 11.
That means couples getting married in Springfield during 2026 are doing so during a genuine milestone in American road-trip history.
A hundred years from the creation of Route 66.
That's pretty special.
Coming to Springfield for a Wedding This Weekend?
Here's my advice.
If you're coming to Springfield for a wedding and have extra time, go downtown and experience the Mother Road Festival.
See the cars.
Listen to the music.
Walk around.
Take photographs.
Try something local.
And if your wedding isn't until later in the day, enjoy Springfield—but give yourself enough time to return to your hotel, get dressed and arrive at the wedding when you're supposed to.
Not an hour early.

Your wedding venue does not need you 45 minutes early.
The Mother Road Is Part of Our Story
There is something I love about owning a wedding venue in this particular part of Springfield.
On wedding days, couples arrive at Pole Barn Chic and almost immediately feel removed from the city.
The property gets quiet.
The country takes over.
Then the chandeliers come on.
Guests arrive.
The wedding bells ring.
The music starts.
And a property in Springfield, Illinois, becomes the setting for another family's story.
Outside our gates is a community shaped by Lincoln, agriculture, state government and one of the most famous roads in America.
That's an identity worth celebrating.
So this weekend, while classic cars roll through downtown Springfield and thousands of people celebrate a highway that has connected Americans for a century, we're happy to celebrate right along with them.
